This painting was a commission for Lancashire County Rugby Football Union arranged by John Burgess CBE (Harold’s Friend) who went on to be the President of the Rugby Football Union. I believe the game was possibly 1980-81 season (8th Nov 1981 at Waterloo) and must have been copied from a photograph as the players are instantly recognisable.
The match is a Roses game against Yorkshire, the three Lancashire players are Dave Tabern, Sir Bill Beaumont CBE and Jim Syddall.
The picture was to celebrate our Centenary in 1981-82 season and has for many years been on loan and was hung in the RFU Chairman’s office at Twickenham.
The painting is oil on board, carries Harold’s signature and has a typed biography of Harold on the back.
