James Moore

Island Time

James Moore was drawn to certain elements in John Tunnard’s painting that appear to be landscape-like. Moore uses collage, which is one of the classic techniques of surrealism, or at least, Moore’s painting uses the appearance of collage, a simulation of it. Moore has taken a section of Tunnard’s painting and re-painted it so that it appears pasted into an undulating sea.  The pictorial space appears like something from a dream. The coming of the unconscious. The sea always strikes Moore as lending itself to being understood as an image of the unconscious mind. A big undulating mind pool, covered in waves and affected by the changing light and currents.
