As a youngster from the terraces of Lower Broughton attending Harold Riley’s Saturday morning classes at Buille Hill from age of 12 to 18 he certainly changed my life path. Leading to a degree in fine art and a career in art education, and latterly as Vice President of St Ives Arts Club and Honorary Director of National Acrylic Painters Association. I would like to share my gratitude to his widow and family.
Harold certainly changed my life from working class lad in Salford to a life in art. Incidentally he encouraged me to join Salford arts club and I sold my first painting in Salford Art Gallery at the club annual show at the age of 16 in 1967.
This sketch is an example of what I believe to be made by Harold when demonstrating techniques which he always did on an individual basis. In 1965 Harold presented each Buille Hill group member with a pocket sized art book. My book was on El Greco and signed by Harold and sealed with his wax seal.
