You may have noticed that the opening hours for our beautifully recreated Victorian Street, Lark Hill Place, have changed. We are now open Tuesday to Sunday 11.30am – 4.00pm during Salford term time. This is because the museum’s Learning Team are in the process of reinventing our School and Home Education sessions.

Following teacher feedback, we are updating our sessions to make them more immersive, playful and impactful. Our history-based sessions now all include an hour of exclusive access to Lark Hill Place. The first one to go live was Meet the Street: The Victorians of Lark Hill Place! Learners meet Mrs Bracegirdle, one of the local residents to help her with her chores while she shares stories about her neighbours and life in Lark Hill Place. Children also explore the Victorian Gallery, play with Victorian toys, and enjoy story time. This session provides meaningful engagement on site and encourages continued learning beyond the visit.

Our Key Stage Two session, Time Detectives, now opens on Lark Hill Place. Here, learners discover how objects help us understand the past by observing them in situ, as if they have just been used, followed by hands-on exploration of the same objects from our handling collection.

Looking ahead, September 2026 will see the relaunch of our Key Stage Two Local History session, also starting on the Victorian Street. Learners will compare past and present life on the High Street, explore how inventions have changed everyday life, and examine archive materials—such as maps, photographs and census records—to build a picture of Salford residents from the past.

While we recognise that this slightly reduces visiting time for non educational groups, we appreciate your understanding. We hope you share our excitement about providing richer, more meaningful experiences for our young visitors.
