Local textile artist Leah Higgins takes inspiration from the cotton and coal mining industries which have touched her life and shaped her environment.

In large, abstract wall hangings she celebrates former mills that continue to erode and decay, and those that have found a new purpose, while in other work Leah references specific collieries in Manchester and Salford, exploring an industry that mostly exists today in our memories.

Leah also explores our relationship with objects made with material taken straight from the earth in work inspired by pottery from the Pilkington Tile and Pottery Company.

More information about the artist and the exhibition can be found here.

Exhibition on display in our North Gallery from 16 December 2023 to 5 May 2024.
