Time Detectives – Salford Museum & Art Gallery

You will be greeted at the entrance by our facilitators who will deliver the first part of the session in the Victorian Gallery. This session is focused on historical enquiry, and the pupils will be asked to work in groups to try and identify some mystery objects. They will then be taken on a tour of our Victorian street to find out about their objects, and what life would have been like in Victorian times.

Learning objectives

By the end of the sessions learners will:

  • Have handled and investigated Victorian objects.
  • Have learned about historical changes through studying an appropriate range of sources of information (ref. History NC KS2).
  • Be able to ask and answer questions, and to select information relevant to the focus of the inquiry (ref. History NC KS2).

Cost

  • £3.50 per pupil (Salford schools)
  • £4.50 per pupil (non-Salford schools)
  • Minimum charge of £30.00 for smaller groups

Time

This is a half-day session (2 hours) with the option to stay for lunch and extend your visit with teacher-led activities (subject to availability).

Numbers

We can only accommodate one class in Lark Hill Place (maximum of 35) due to health and safety reasons. Larger groups can be split up, with part of the group visiting the other galleries. All groups must be accompanied by adults – we recommend a ratio of at least 1 to 10.

Discovering Local History – Salford Museum & Art Gallery

Investigate how places change over time by interacting with old maps and images. Carry out your own detective work to discover how different historical sources can help us to find out how people lived in the past.

Cost

  • £3.50 per pupil (Salford schools)
  • £4.50 per pupil (non-Salford schools)

Art Session – Salford Museum & Art Gallery

Create a large scale artwork based on The Visit of Queen Victoria to Peel Park painting in our atmospheric Victorian Gallery. Look at the textures and patterns of the frames to decorate the hanging and get creative with mark-making, led by one of our experienced facilitators. Pupils will be able to take a piece of artwork home.

Cost

A two hour session costs £3.50 per pupil (Salford schools) and £4.00 per pupil (schools outside Salford). Why not spend the whole day with us and do a Key Stage 2 Time Detectives session and an Art session for £5.50 per pupil (Salford schools) and £6.00 per pupil (schools outside Salford).

Time

This is a half-day session: 10.00am to 12.00pm or 1.00pm to 3.00pm.

Ordsall Alive! Ordsall Hall

During this session pupils will explore the Grade 1 listed Ordsall Hall by stepping back in time to help to prepare for a Tudor wedding feast. As the Radclyffe family and their servants prepare for the celebration, pupils will help them and will get an insight in to what Tudor homes were like.

There will be hard work to do in the kitchen, Great Chamber and Star Chamber as well as a dance to learn in the Great Gall. Our facilitators will help your class to learn about Tudor celebrations, food and homes as well as discovering how different life was for rich and poor people during this period.

Learning objectives

By the end of the session learners will:

  • Have met and interacted with high and low status characters from Tudor times.
  • Have performed practical activities using replica Tudor objects.
  • Have found out about Tudor homes and compared them to homes in the present day.
  • Be able to identify difference between the way of life of rich and poor people in Tudor times.

  • £5.50 per pupil for schools in Salford
  • £6.00 per pupil for schools outside Salford

This is a full day session from 10.00am to 2.30pm.
