Eileen Agar’s painting Room with a view of the Moon is full of angular lines and opaque colours. In its solid interior, the moon and everything in the room exists in strange planes, both closer and further away than expected. Xanthe Burdett takes the viewer out of the encased interior world of this painting into a surreal exterior world. She draws on the aesthetics of Agar’s collages, layering the moon and other elements from Agar’s original work, to swirl around the edges of the board where strange creatures bound and chase each other around the frame.
