David Leapman has continued to maintain an interest in the tensions between cultural identity and the universal, especially within his own paintings where a linear brushstroke can take on multiple forms, from idiosyncratic images of hybrid creatures to indefinite objects that map out sections of the composition. Some of these cellular beings have their own agency, scuttling around the surface with contorted limbs, a multi-limbed chimera. Leapman came to recognise a sympathy for surrealism that ruptures the partition between the real and the imagined, and to reveal the strangeness of lived experience concealed behind the comfortable facade of normal life.
